A.C.M. Frame:

Asterisk's patented Anatomical Carbon Matrix frame is made using Reaction Injection Molding (RIM)—a process in which carbon fiber braid is laid into a frame mold, and a two-part foam/epoxy is then shot into the mold, yielding a reaction that instantly expands and cures. During the reaction, the carbon fiber braiding is pressed to the outer walls of the mold, resulting in a lightweight, extremely durable, foam core carbon fiber sandwich structure.Asterisk's frame shapes are designed around laser-scanned shapes of actual human legs, giving them their anatomically correct shape. The upper frame is designed to accommodate the dynamics of the thigh musculature, allowing the muscles to flex and relax without interference. Not only does this design keep the frame properly positioned on the leg, it does so without constricting the muscles as they pump. The lower portion of the frame is designed and shaped to capture the tubercle, which is at the top of the tibia (shinbone) just under the knee joint. This is a must in order to help protect against lower leg rotation, one of the biggest causes of knee injury. This design, in conjunction withAsterisk's patented Anti Rotation Tether, makes the CELL, and all Asterisk knee protection systems, the most effective products available.

Asymmetri-Glide Hinge:

Asterisk’s patented asymmetrical, eight-sphere, four-bar hinge mechanism is the only hinge developed that can actually contour the inside of the leg at an oblique angle to the outside hinge. What in the world does this mean? The Asymmetri-Glide Hinge is the only hinge available that actually tracks the natural motion of the very complex knee joint. The human knee joint has two different ratios of rotation. The tibia rotates around the femoral (thighbone) head. The femoral head is not perfectly round, however, and thus the movement starts out by "sweeping" down the somewhat flat face of the femoral head, which becomes the center of rotation. As the knee joint moves further into flexion, the femoral head begins rounding off, creating a second center of rotation.Asterisk's hinge design mimics this "rolling-gliding," dual center of rotation motion precisely, keeping the brace from "caterpillaring" up or down the leg during flexion and extension. The extension stops in this hinge are adjustable within a range of 0° to 40°. The extension regulator works in unison with the "Hyper X" feature of the Uni-Quad fastening system, creating the most effective tool available for helping to guard against hyperextension of the knee, a major cause of knee injury. The hinge design also allows for a 10mm lateral shift, which gives the lower frame automatic tibia alignment, allowing it to accurately capture the tubercle (top of the shinbone). By having an asymmetrical hinge, we allow the frame to follow closer to the inner, or medial side of the leg. Having the frame set closer to the leg reduces the distance between the tank and leg for motocross applications, as well as allows it to initiate the turn toward the tibia sooner than most "standard" hinges, giving you a more intimate feel between your leg and the bike. With the turn of a screw you can fine-tune the adjustment to your exact liking.

A.R.C. Cuff:

The CELL’s Adjustable Retention Control, multiform cuff is just one of the many ways we have made the system truly supportive and customizable. The rigid lateral arms of the A.R.C. Cuff contain the lateral side of the thigh and calf, offering great protection against lateral blows. And in addition to giving the brace adjustability, the A.R.C. Cuff offers rigidity at the same time. How is all of this achieved? Two stainless steel tendon strips separately run the length of the cuff. As the adjustment screw is tightened, the rotary action of the screw threading through the tendon strip causes it to shorten. At the opposite end of the adjustment screw, the tendon strip is securely connected to the end of the cuff, causing the strip to "arc" in the direction of least resistance. Slightly pre-arced toward the leg when placed into the cuff body, the tendon strip directs the path of least resistance toward the leg. In other words, as you tighten the cuff, rigidity is dramatically increased as it wraps securely around your calf and thigh. In the event of a lateral blow, the the force is directed into the lower cuff. The force is then triangulated back into the brace. The force runs back across the frame to the medial hinge and then back again into the upper cuff. The force that would have been directed into the knee joint is now disbursed through the brace.

Tele-Tri Patella Cup:

Asterisk's patented telescoping three-piece patella cup is the only full-time, full-coverage knee brace patella cup on the market. Made up of three separate pieces that slide past one another throughout the knee’s normal range of motion, the Tele-Tri Patella Cup system functions without ever leaving a gap in coverage. Each piece of the cup is made from a modified high-impact Nylon 6 material. As most components in Asterisk’s knee protection systems are, the patella cup was designed around laser-scanned shapes of human legs, giving it its anatomically correct inner shape. The entire area of the inner patella cup is lined with a dense yet comfortable thermo-formed EV50 shock absorbent foam.

Uni-Quad Fastener:

The Uni-Quad Fastener is a giant step up from the standard Velcro®-type straps of yesteryear. Consisting of one uniformed piece, the Uni-Quad fastener is actually adjustable in four separate quadrants, giving you the ability to fine-tune the security of the brace to your precise liking. Much like a shoe, each quadrant is adjusted using nylon cord crisscrossing back and forth across a super-stretch neoprene "tongue" over the calf and hamstring muscles. This system eliminates the "roping" effect across the muscles sometimes experienced with straps. With this patented method of fastening, brace slippage will become a thing of the past. The nylon cord in quadrants two and three, closest to the knee joint, are both laced through a soft-structure, "Hyper-X" pattern piece of high-strength nylon/Cordura. This "Hyper-X" pattern creates a link between the two quadrants directly behind the knee joint, creating a bridge between the upper and lower portion of the brace. As the leg extends, quadrants two and three move farther and farther apart from each other. As this happens, the tension in the "Hyper-X" pattern becomes greater, and it is this tension that helps to keep the leg from hyperextending out of the brace once the full desired extension is reached. Working in unison with the extension limiter on the Asymmetri-Glide Hinge, the Uni-Quad fastening system is extremely comfortable, distributing pressure evenly over the entire backside of the leg.

Anti-Rotation Tether:

Quite possibly the best feature on any knee protective devise ever, this very simple yet effective Anti-Rotation attachment is an adjustable link between the CELL and your motocross or ski boot. Linking the brace to the boot essentially makes them one, which is crucial to transferring and diminishing the forces of a lower leg rotation from your toe edge, through the medial side of the frame, and back across into the upper cuff of the brace. Research shows that the most common cause of ACL rupture is a traumatic force being applied to the knee in a twisting movement. The Anti-Rotation tether is the most effective defense available against this type of lower leg rotation.

Asterisk Cell Knee Brace Pair - Sizing

General Sizing information

If you are unsure about your size, compare your body measurements to the charts provided to determine the correct fit. These charts will give you a good idea of the size to order, but be sure to read special sizing information that may accompany an item description. Some merchandise dimensions may vary from the averages charted here.

Knee Circumference

To ensure proper fit, circumference measurements should be taken directly on the skin with the leg straightened, using a soft tape measure. (If a soft tape measure is not available, a piece of string or yarn may be used to calibrate the leg's diameter, then measured against a hard tape measure.)

Locate the middle of the kneecap and measure around the leg. Measurements should be taken directly on the skin with a straight leg.

I have used the Asterisk knee braces once since i made the purchase. I ride predominately H/S and some motocross. The braces support a bit better than the old style. They fit and feel better also. I have bad knees and use them so I can walk without pain after I ride. Asterisk appear to be high quality and well built. I did not use the anti twist device as I seem to do fine without them. At the sale price I feel they were a very fair deal.
