Supersport made its debut in Russia this past weekend, capping off an action-packed inaugural event for the Moscow Raceway.
Perfect weather greeted the riders and provided great conditions for racing. Kenan Sofuoglu won his third race of the season and extended his lead in the championship rankings to 33 points. Sofuoglu was neck-and-neck with Turkish rider Jules Cluzel for most of the race but pulled ahead to cross the finish line about five seconds before him.
Cluzel was pleased with his second place finish, despite giving up an early lead to Sofuoglu, as it puts him in second place in the overall point standings.
“I tried to follow Kenan and as the gap grew bigger, I thought I would see what happens to him,” said Cluzel. “He got faster for the last six-seven laps though. The good thing is I finished in a good position; it was easy to finish second and I am really happy to be second in the championship.”
Russian fans got a thrill when the country’s own Vladimir Leonov surprised the field to take third place. The first supersport event to take place on Russian soil saw over 32,000 motorsports fans attend to take in the action.
