Advanced Motorcycle Helmets On The Horizon
Motorsports enthusiasts know that having the right motorcycle helmet is of the utmost importance. When it comes to safety, it’s probably the single most essential piece of gear – but what if the helmet did more than just protect the head? Riders are about to find out the answer to that question, as LiveMap is introducing motorcycle helmets that incorporate augmented reality and state-of-the-art technological tools into the design.

The Russian company has created a helmet that projects a screen on the visor. Then riders can see a full-color, translucent image – without obstructing the view of the road, Motorcycle.com reports. In fact, the display may help reduce distractions on the road, as it eliminates the need for a separate screen or GPS and will be designed to prevent outside videos or games from being played.

When riders don the helmet, they’ll be using features more reminiscent of a fighter pilot than a motorcyclist. The display boasts a built-in navigation system and control panel, alerting a rider of directions as well as speed and other necessary information. All communication will be done through voice commands, and a microphone will be installed in the helmet to prevent riders from having to take their hands off the machine.

According to Auto Evolution, the helmet’s display changes based on the speed of the bike. High speeds correlate to fewer distractions on the screen, while more comprehensive information is added when a machine slows to a stop.

LiveMap anticipates that it will begin shipping the helmets in August 2014. The company is currently recruiting investors to make mass-production a reality, so in the meantime riders will have to make do with top-of-the-line safety offerings for their protective gear and communications devices.
